Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for a curious and impact-driven engineer who thrives in a collaborative environment. In this role, you will work on the Site Engineering team and have an opportunity to build features across The Washington Post’s digital surfaces. The team is full stack, working with React and modern JavaScript on the front end and Python on the backend. This role requires working closely with the newsroom’s editorial staff and its publishing systems.

Motivation

  • You have a passion for writing flexible and reusable code and you are energized by working across the full stack.

  • You're a continuous learner, committed to regularly improving your craft and embracing new technologies and best practices.

  • You thrive in a collaborative environment and enjoy working with your colleagues to solve hard problems.

  • You want to make a meaningful impact by shaping how people consume news.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver value to our users by implementing features and maintaining applications across our stack.

  • Ensure high-quality, maintainable code by writing clean, performant, and well-documented software and regularly reviewing colleagues’ code.

  • Engage with your fellow engineers to create and maintain a dynamic and scalable architecture.

  • Foster a culture of continuous learning by being curious about our cloud infrastructure, learning and experimenting with AWS, and learning how our infrastructure supports our stack.

  • This role requires limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule is on a rotating basis and will be determined a couple of months after you join, taking into account team size and other variables.

Qualifications

It’s okay not to meet 100% of these requirements! We’re primarily looking for people who meet most of these requirements and are motivated to learn new technologies and expand their skill set.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, an equivalent field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • A minimum of 2 years of professional software development experience in a team setting.

  • Proficiency in React, JavaScript, TypeScript, and modern front-end development technology and best practices.

  • Experience working with Python.

  • Comfort with command line (Unix & Linux) navigation and revision tracking (Git).

  • Knowledge about DevOps technologies such as Docker and Jenkins.

  • Knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS) such as S3, EC2, ELB, SES, and CloudWatch.

  • Experience writing unit and integration tests to ensure code quality.

  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills.

The Washington Post’s policy for employees is five days per week in the office, with exceptions for newsgathering and general business travel.
